Selection Techniques for Slurry Pumps under Operating Conditions


The reasonable selection of slurry pump directly determines its service life and operating efficiency. In practical applications, operating conditions (such as continuous/intermittent operation, fixed/mobile use, ambient temperature, altitude, etc.) are one of the important factors affecting pump performance and reliability. If these conditions are ignored, it may lead to motor overload, cavitation, increased vibration, and even equipment damage.

Therefore, when selecting, it is necessary to make a systematic judgment based on specific working conditions, comprehensive flow rate, head, medium characteristics, and on-site environment.

Key points of selection

1. Clarify the operating mode: continuous or intermittent? Fixed or mobile?

Continuous operation: Priority should be given to models with sturdy structure, good heat dissipation, and long bearing life (such as AH series), and equipped with reliable cooling and lubrication systems.

Intermittent or temporary use: WQ submersible sewage pump equipment can be selected, with flexible installation and no need for a pump room, suitable for mobile or emergency situations.

Fixed installation: It is recommended to use horizontal cantilever structures (such as ZJ and AH types), which have high stability and are easy to maintain.

Mobile use: It is recommended to choose submersible or submerged slurry pumps (such as SP type, ZJL type), which can directly work in the pool and save infrastructure costs.

2. Adaptation of environment and installation conditions

Condition type, impact, selection suggestions

At high altitude, the air becomes thin, affecting the heat dissipation and cavitation performance of the motor. When selecting a pump, the motor's capacity reduction coefficient should be checked, and if necessary, a high-altitude motor should be selected

Environmental temperature, extreme high or low temperatures affect the performance of lubricating grease and material brittleness. Heat resistant lubricating grease (such as lithium based grease) is used in high temperature areas, and accumulated water is drained to prevent freezing and cracking in cold areas

The liquid level fluctuates greatly, and traditional pumps are prone to suction, which affects stable transportation. Therefore, SP (SPR) type submersible pumps are selected, which can be immersed in liquid for operation and adapt to changes in liquid level

3. Precautions for start-up and adjustment methods

Before starting, the outlet valve must be closed to prevent motor overload caused by excessive starting current, and to avoid cavitation caused by sudden drop in inlet pressure.

Do not adjust the flow rate by closing the inlet valve: it can cause insufficient suction, cavitation, and damage to the impeller and pump body.

It is recommended to use a variable frequency drive (VFD) to achieve soft start and precise speed regulation, which can extend the lifespan of the equipment.

4. Multi stage series connection and head margin design

When the head of a single pump is insufficient, multiple pumps can be connected in series to transport strong abrasive slurry over long distances.

Suggest increasing the head margin by 10% to compensate for the performance degradation caused by wear of overcurrent components and ensure long-term stable operation.

The key to selecting a slurry pump under operating conditions is to match the operating mode (continuous/intermittent, fixed/mobile), environmental parameters (temperature, altitude), and control system (start stop mode, frequency conversion), and reserve a 10% head margin to cope with wear attenuation.
