Guidelines for Selecting Slurry Pumps Considering Liquid Properties


The selection of slurry pumps must be based on the physical and chemical properties of the liquid (slurry), especially the characteristics, concentration, corrosiveness (pH value), viscosity, etc. of solid particles, which directly determine the material, sealing form, and overall structural design of the pump's flow components.

In the selection process of slurry pumps, it is far from enough to only consider flow rate and head. The actual properties of the conveying medium, namely the "slurry", are the core factors that determine whether the pump can operate stably for a long time. Neglecting the properties of the liquid may lead to rapid wear, corrosion failure, or cavitation of the pump, seriously affecting production efficiency and equipment life.

Material and Sealing: How to Match Liquid Properties

Material selection for overcurrent components

Select based on the combination of abrasive and corrosive properties of the slurry:

High abrasion+low corrosion: high chromium cast iron (such as A05 material), high hardness alloy.

High abrasion+high corrosion: wear-resistant rubber (such as R08 material), ceramic composite materials.

Strong corrosiveness: stainless steel (316L), duplex stainless steel, titanium alloy, etc.

Selection of shaft seal form

The sealing method should prevent leakage and adapt to the working conditions:

Packing seal: requires shaft sealing water, suitable for general working conditions, low cost, but with slight leakage.

Secondary impeller seal: used for reverse flow conditions, no external water supply is required, but power consumption increases by about 5%.

Mechanical seal: Good sealing performance, no leakage, suitable for transporting toxic, flammable or valuable slurries, recommended for use in harsh environments.

Prioritize obtaining slurry sample data, including measured parameters such as particle size distribution curve, pH value, density, concentration, temperature, etc.

Refer to the professional selection manual: Based on the classification standards of mainstream pump types such as Warman, preliminarily screen pump types (such as L-type, AH type, SP type) according to the properties of the slurry.

Collaborative selection with suppliers: Provide complete operating condition data, ask the manufacturer to calculate the conversion from clean water performance to slurry performance, and confirm the head margin (usually+10%) and power margin.
